The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament, viz. The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act No.XXXVIII of 1949) for regulating the profession of Chartered Accountancy in the country. The Institute, functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. The ICAI is the second largest professional body of Chartered Accountants in the world, with a strong tradition of service to the Indian economy in public interest.

So, in this post we are going to clear your all doubts about CA Course regarding duration, fees, dates, and eligibility.

Here we are sharing overall process and procedure of Chartered Accountancy course length, beginning from its entry level into the Final level exam. We’ll explore the entire period of CA course after 12th and after graduation.

CA Course Details

Chartered Accountancy course is simple and straightforward. There are five different levels followed by CA Foundation, CA IPCC, Articleship, AICITSS, and CA Final. Except CA Articleship you have to take exams in each level.

CA Foundation

CA Foundation is the entry level or entry level exam. Previously, there was Common Proficiency Test instead of foundation but after the revised scheme it has been changed to CA foundation.

CA foundation exams conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto. It is organised 2 times a year. It requires four months study period. There are 4 papers in CA Foundation.

Paper-3: Business Mathematics and Logical Reasoning & Statistics

CA IPCC / CA Intermediate IPC (Integrated Professional Competence)

CA IPCC is second level in CA Course. Intermediate course valid for 4 years after the registration. It is also held 2 times a year. There are two groups, the subjects are as followed:

CA Articleship

The Chartered Accountancy course in India entails three years of articleship which is to be pursued after clearing Group 1 or both of Intermediate and completing both ICITSS-ITT and ICITSS-OC. However, there are certain information that is not normally available. So, the not so common rules and information that I have found through my struggles during articleship. One has to also complete his/her MCS-advance IT and MCS-orientation course during articleship before appearing for CA final exams.

As per ICAI Bosapp, there are 2,656 CA firms and companies who provide CA articleship under ICAI. The articleship is 3 years training.

AICITSS

AICITSS means Advance Information Technology and Management and Communication Skills Program. Students have to undergo such program while pursuing their last two years of Articleship Training. It is compulsory for all students.

CA Final

CA final is the last and final level/stage in CA course where after competing this you can officially and legally can call yourself a Chartered Accountant. There are also 2 groups in CA final like CA Intermediate and as like others it is also held two times a year. There are total eight papers in CA final.

CA Course After 12th

Anyone can register for Chartered Accountancy course after 12th. There are some things you have to consider when applying for the course. After 12th you can register for CA by registering through CA foundation course. It is the first step you have do after 12th.

  • Enrol for Foundation Course after appearing in Class 12th Examination conducted by an examining body
    constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto.
  • Complete four months Study Period. Register till 30th June/ 31st December for being eligible to appear in
    November/ May Foundation Course Examination.
  • Appear in Foundation Examination after passing in the Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 examination) conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognised by the Central Government as equivalent thereto and on complying with (ii) above
  • Join Intermediate Course (CA IPCC) after passing Foundation Examination.
  • Appear in Intermediate Examination on completion of 8 months of study course as on first day of the month in
    which the examination is to be held.
  • After completing Intermediate you should undergo Four Weeks Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft skills (ICITSS) consisting of Courses on Information Technology and Orientation Course at the earliest but these are to be completed compulsorily before commencement of their articleship.
  • Join articled training after passing either of the Group or Both Groups of Intermediate Course and after
    successfully undergoing ICITSS.
  • Clear the balance Group (if any) of Intermediate Examination.
  • Register for Final Course.
  • Successfully undergo Four Weeks Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft skills (AICITSS) consisting of Courses on Advanced Information Technology and Management Communication skills during the last two years of practical training but before appearing in the Final Examination.
  • Appear in the Final Examination on completion of the practical training or whileserving last 6 months of articled training on or before the last day of the month preceding the month in which the examination is to be held after successful completion of AICITSS.
  • Complete articled training of 3 years.
  • Pass Final Examination.
  • Enrol as a member of the ICAI and be designated as “Chartered Accountant”.

As per above, the total duration of Chartered Accountancy course after 12th can be estimated to be 4.5 years. The only challenge is that you have to complete all its levels in your first attempt. Because each number of attempt increases your six months in this journey.

If you are graduated or planning to register for Chartered Accountancy course after graduation than you CA foundation exam exemption and the route called direct entry scheme where you can register directly for Intermediate Course (IPCC) after graduation.

You are required: Commerce Graduates/Post-Graduates (55%) or Other Graduates/Post-Graduates (60%).

  •  Enrol with the Institute for Intermediate Course.
  • Undergo Four Weeks Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft skills (ICITSS) consisting of Courses on Information Technology and Orientation Course before commencement of their articleship.
  • Register for Practical Training of three years (CA Articleship).
  • Appear in Intermediate Examination on completion of 9 months of Practical Training on first day of the month in which the examination is to be held.
  • Appear and pass in both groups of Intermediate Examination.
  • Register for CA Final Course.
  • Successfully undergo Four Weeks Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft skills (AICITSS) consisting of Courses on Advanced Information Technology and Management Communication Skills during the last two years of practical training but before appearing in the Final Examination.
  • Appear in the Final Examination on completion of the practical training or while serving last 6 months of  articled training on or before the last day of the month preceding the month in which the examination is to be held after successful completion of AICITSS.
  • Complete articled training of 3 years.
  • Pass Final Examination.
  • Enrol as a member of the ICAI and be designated as “Chartered Accountant”.

CA Course Duration After Graduation

ITT and OT Program 4 weeks
Articleship Training (Students have to undergo CA Intermediate Exam after completing nine months of Articleship Training and CA Final while pursuing the last six months of this training). 3 Years

As per the above details, the total duration to complete the CA course after graduation is 3 years approx. Although 3 Years is the minimum duration, every attempt increases your six months.
